Stairs, finished to the same standard as the floor.

Stairs are the most-used wood in the house and the hardest to refinish well. Every tread, riser, nosing and landing is sanded by hand, and the color and finish are matched to the floors they meet, so the staircase reads as one piece with the rest of the home.

What we restore

Treads and risers, landings, nosings, handrails and newel posts. We repair loose or squeaking treads, replace damaged ones with matching stock, and can convert carpeted stairs back to finished wood where the treads are sound.

Matching floors and stairs

If the floors are being refinished at the same time, stairs are sampled and stained with the same batch. If not, we match the existing color on a sample tread before committing.

Two-tone and painted risers

A popular Palm Beach look is stained treads with white painted risers and stringers. We handle both the wood finishing and the paint prep so the lines are crisp.

Working around a staircase

You still need to use the stairs. We finish alternating treads or work in halves so there is always a path, and we use fast-drying finishes on stairs specifically.

Questions about staircases

Can carpeted stairs become wood?

Often yes. Under carpet there is usually a construction-grade tread that can be refinished or capped with a new hardwood tread. We will tell you which after a look.

How long are the stairs out of use?

With alternating-tread finishing, never entirely. Full cure for heavy use takes a few days.

Do you match handrails to floors?

Yes. Rails and newels are stripped, sanded and finished in the same color or a complementary tone if you prefer contrast.
